Historical Background and significance to the Listuguj Mi'gmaq

The Wabanaki Confederacy, which formed one of the greatest alliances in the North American continent among the original nations, can trace its beginnings to the series of alliances formed in the late 17th century originally known as the "convention alliance" by historians.

The Wabanaki Confederacy was an alliance to prevent the further encroachment on our lands and was made by the Mi'gmaq Nation with; the French, the Maliseet, the Passamaquoddy, and the Penebscot and with the Abenaki nations.

The Wabanaki Confederacy however was more than a military and political alliance to defend the boundaries our traditional lands. It was also a cultural and spiritual bond that grew out of the mutual respect that each nation expressed prior to, during and following council fires (traditional intertribal assemblies) that formed that essence of the great confederacy.
